Cuba, communications or the lack there of!

There is no wifi service in Cuba that I could find. No internet cafes. It was very disconcerting in this day and age of instant access to friends and family or information whether it's via the phone or a computer. We were quite literally cut off from the rest of the world.

Some of the Cuban people seem to have email yet no WWW was to be found anywhere. I was very surprised to discover that for some reason satellite phones are illegal to use in Cuba. They asked about our sat phone, and we declared it with customs. They completely understood that it was ship’s equipment, but they warned us that we were forbidden too use it while in Cuba. They didn’t keep it. They only placed a length of seal tape over the case. The tape was placed in a manner that I could have used the phone and replaced the tape if I wanted. We also carry a Delorme Explorer for Satellite texting and locating. I don’t believe the officials had any idea what it was, and I didn’t volunteer any details. We kept this device with us at all times for emergency use including when we traveled to Havana. We even sent a few texts notifying friends and family of our location. I’m not sure if this was a good idea, but it worked out for us this time.
